Short But Sweet

One night a teenage girl brought her new boyfriend home to meet her parents, and they were appalled by his appearance: leather jacket, motorcycle boots, tattoos and pierced nose.  Later, the parents pulled their daughter aside and confessed their concern.  “Dear,” said the mother diplomatically, “he doesn’t seem very nice.”  “Oh please, Mom,” replied the daughter, “if he wasn’t nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?”

Some Thoughts for the Week

“It’s sad to grow old, but nice to ripen”   Brigitte Bardot

“Life is like a ten-speed bicycle.

Most of us have gears we never use.”      Charles Shulz

A Celtic Prayer

I rise today with God’s strength to direct me,

God’s wisdom to guide me,

God’s eyes to look before me,

God’s ears to hear me,

God’s word to speak for me,

God’s hand to uphold me,

God’s pathway before me,

God’s shield to protect me,

God’s host to save me – from temptations,

from one man or many that seek to destroy me.  Amen

Graduation Mass

On Wednesday 21st June Rang V1 celebrated their Graduation Mass in St. Mary’s Church @ 7.30p.m. We hope that our young boys and girls enjoyed the evening.  We wish them every happiness for the future.

Summer Works Scheme  As mentioned on last week’s newsletter school will be getting the Heating System upgraded to a Gas Heating System this summer. This is a big project and we met with Contractors and Consultants during the week. The Contractors made it very clear to us that the timeframes are very tight to get this amount of work completed . They will be starting immediately after we close for Summer Holidays i.e. midday on Wednesday. In order to be able to prepare the classrooms and organise the storage of books and equipment we will be closing early on Tuesday 27th June at 12.00p.m. We regret any inconvenience this causes but we simply have to make proper arrangements to allow the work to commence.  All Classrooms, Cloakrooms, Toilets & Storage Areas will be affected so we need time to box and store books/equipment etc. We will be getting Summer Holidays on Wednesday 28th @ 12.00p.m. as already notified.

Book Rental  In view of SWS already mentioned above, we decided to give out all Book Rental Books for new academic year on Tuesday & Wednesday last. Whilst we would always have stored the books in the past throughout the Summer holidays, this year there is so much physical ‘construction work’ going on, we have decided to ask the children to take the books home with them. We would really appreciate your co-operation with this and ensure the books are kept safe over the holidays. Míle buíochas.

Tidy Schools Award 2017  We got a nice surprise in the post last week!  We were informed that our school has won 1st Place in Carrick Municipal District in the Tipperary County Council Tidy Schools Competition. We have been awarded prize money of €300. This prize was given to us for our work on Biodiversity .The main emphasis of the competition is on litter awareness, waste management and on appreciation of our general environment.

Retirement Function  We will be marking the retirement of Ms. Nellie Hayes on Tuesday 27th May at 11.00 a.m. in the hall. The Board of Management & Staff will make a small presentation to Nellie who has given in excess of 30 years sterling service to the school. We look forward to welcoming Nellie back to St. Mary’s and it will be an opportunity for all the children to say hello to her once more.

Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament

Outside the church the noisy traffic flows past.

People rush hither and thither.

But I have left that world behind

And I am here before you.

I do not exclude my brothers and Sisters.

I bring them with me,

For I know that they are equally dear to you.

I have nothing.

Bur I feel that I have everything

Since I have you.

Call for Clonmel to Thurles Greenway.

From The Nationalist –

A call has been made to devleop a new Greenway between Clonmel and Thurles along the former railway line that linked the two towns.

One of the most successful Greenways in the country is the new one in Co. Waterford between Dungarvan and Waterford city that also follows the route of the old rail line.

Independent Councillor Jim Ryan made the call for a walking and cycling track along the disused railway line.

The innovative suggestion came from the Thurles councillor at a meeting of Tipperary County Council which was attended by Barry Kenny, Jim Galvin and Eileen Murphy of Iarnrod Eireann.

Full Article

The old railway line runs close to Killenaule passing through Laffansbridge as seen in this brochure designed by David Moloney.

Discussion about the idea can be had on Boards.ie where there is also a link to Twitter and Facebook accounts to promote the idea.
